Project title:   Urban water health project-II

Partner organization: Technical University of Munich.

The project was restarted in the month of June 2017. It aim is to study Leh town further intensively into the development aspects and its impact on the fragile environment and its resources.

Leh is one of the fastest growing town in India and it is also growing as a hub of adventure tourism on the tourism map of India. Huge amount of tourist, domestic as well as international visits Leh every year and numbers are increasing exponentially. To cater the demand Government is implementing projects like centralized sewage treatment system, providing incentives to build hospitality units, augmentation in water supplies etc.

Huge amount of hotels and Guest houses are coming up on the agricultural land thereby decreasing in agricultural land for cultivation. Also economic prosperity making the general population transit from their forefather’s profession towards the tourism sector.

The town is now more or less fully dependent on the import supplies for their day to day need. Staple foods are only confined to some exhibitions and workshops only.

In view of all this rapid transformation, a study have to conduct to check the various aspect of developments, so that we can shape the development in a sustainable way.

Objective of the programme:

i.        GIS mapping and spatial analysis of new hotels and guest houses in Leh

ii.        Mahabodhi School campus, GIS mapping and spatial analysis.

iii.        GIS spatial analysis for development of alternate decentralized wastes water management options in Leh town.

iv.        Conduct interviews and surveys.

v.        Mapping and spatial analysis of groundwater sources and also study the water quality, physical as well as microbiology.

vi.        Conduct a stakeholder meeting.

 

Outcome:

  1. Publication on the project finding in international peer-reviewed journals.
  2. Development of pilot project on decentralized wastewater management.
  3. Generate Knowledge resource.
