1. PROGRAM COORDINATOR, RENEWABLE ENERGY

The Renewable Energy program aims to address the basic energy needs of the region. The remoteness and harshness of the mountainous Ladakh region makes electrification via the central electric grid network expensive and difficult to implement. The disperse nature of the rural population combined with remote intractable terrains substantially increases the actual cost of electricity delivered. Besides, the climate drives up the fuel requirement due to high space heating needs in the cold and long winters, both for the rural and the urban areas.

LEDeG has approached this problem through alternative and decentralized energy sources like Micro-Hydro power, SPV power, through renewable energy-powered applications like passive solar architecture and various solar devices and appropriate technologies.

The Program Coordinator will head the program and is expected to give it intellectual and managerial leadership. S/He will report to the Executive Director and manage a small team of field assistants and/or technicians, and possibly project coordinators handling separate projects within the program.

2. PROGRAM COORDINATOR, RURAL LIVELIHOODS

The Rural Livelihoods program focuses on providing supplementary incomes to the people in the villages of Ladakh. While the traditionally self-sufficient communities of Ladakh cannot be said to be poor, in an increasingly monetized economy, lack of opportunities to earn cash income means that services like education and health can be difficult to access for the rural communities. With the Rural Livelihoods program, we are trying to promote equity in access to the fruits of development to all and also to stop rural-urban migration because of lack of adequate economic opportunities in the villages.

The strategy of the Rural Livelihoods program is to enhance the skill bases of the target groups through trainings and hand-holding support, in sectors such as handicrafts and food processing and other ‘off farming season’ vocations so that they could supplement their earnings from the farms during the winter and other agriculturally lean periods. We also help them use/exploit their natural resource bases in a sustainable manner.

3. PROGRAM COORDINATOR, URBAN ENVIRONMENT

Three decades of tourism and development have not only accelerated the urbanization of Leh and Kargil towns, but have also led to the deterioration of the urban environment, endangering not only its aesthetic appeal, but also the resource base of the valley. We are looking at possibilities to collaborate with the local government, civil society organizations and the people on issues such as sustainable use and management of the ground water, solid waste management, air and water pollution and the like.

The program would also run a sub-theme called ‘Youth, Environment and Society (YES!)’ that would try and link the youth, especially school children, to these issues with the idea of building a greener next generation and also involving them as agents of change in taking the message to the wider society and roping them into a collective action towards a cleaner and more sustainable urban environment.
