Passive Solar Housing in Western Himalayas


LEDeG is part of the network of NGOs in Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh on the project titled   “Passive Solar Housing in the Western Himalayas. The project is being implemented by GERES with the help of local NGOs.LEDeG has been identified as the resourse NGO for Trombe Wall considering its expertise with the technology over the years. There are three main technologies under Passive Solar Construction, They are Trombe wall, direct gain and attached green house. LEDeG constructed 395 passive solar houses in Ladakh since the year 2003 which includes 225 PSHs under GERES programme.

Aims and Objectives:

The project is aimed at improving the living conditions of the people in remote areas and facilitate their socio-economic development.

Activities:

Under the PSH Project, the following activities were carried out:

  • Village meetings were held in the project areas to orient and introduce the Pasive Solar Technology to the communities and to collect the list of interested promoters.
  • An investment study, aimed at an investigation into the skills, design choice and community mobilization, was conducted before the implementation.
  • Localized mason trainings were conducted
  • 225 PSHs are being constructed in three blocks of Leh out of which 60 percent is completed and the reaming 40 percent is in the process of completion.
  • The reliance on fuel for space heating has been reduced by two third besides reducing indoor air pollution and hazards to human health. Moreover, production of3.5 tons of CO2 has been reduced annually by each household.
  • Temperature of rooms always remained above 10C in winter in PSH while as it goes down below Zero in non-PSH during peak winter.
  • The handicraft production got doubled during winter due to PSH technology.
