World environment day

LEDeG conducted awareness campaigns in Leh town on solid waste management and environmental pollution on World Environment Day, 5th June 2009. It was a successful programme that witnessed the participation of students, organisations, residents of Leh and local administration. The campaign had activities mainly designed for school children, such as a quiz competition, skit presentation and poster-making and model displays. On the 4th of June, a cleanliness drives was organised by LEDeG to clean local areas around Leh town involving the locals. Simultaneously, Khardung-la clean-up drive with volunteers and school children awareness procession was also held on June 5th in order to celebrate ‘World Environment Day’ at Leh. School children and locals were made aware of solid waste and garbage disposal problems at Leh town and Khardung-la. The awareness campaign was attended by Chief Executive Councillor and other Executive Councillors from Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council

(LAHDC) and representatives of schools, government departments and non-governmental organizations. The event received widespread media coverage, both mass media (All India Radio) and print media.
